Pine Island Plot Approval is the Latest Purchase for Conservation 20/20

As a part of the Conservation 20/20 initiative, the Lee County Board of Commissioners voted to approve the purchase of 10 acres in St. James City on Pine Island back in early March. The plot is contiguous of the Pine Island Flatwoods Preserve and the Calusa Land Trust conservation land.

The plot consists of native pine flatwoods, mangrove forests, and natural wetlands, according to an article on the Cape Coral Breeze. The purchase was originally recommended by the Conservation Land Acquisition and Stewardship Advisory Committee in September 2020. That committee was created by the board to oversee the Conservation 20/20 program. The March 2021 vote of approval is for a purchase agreement of $30,000.

Conservation 20/20, the Lee County land acquisition and management program, has preserved 31,060 acres of land across 146 properties to date, making up a total of 51 preserves. The initiative protects natural areas in Lee County for the benefit of present and future generations in Southwest Florida.

The program was established in 1996 through a voter referendum and reaffirmed at the ballot box in 2016, receiving 84 percent majority support from Lee County voters.
