Good news for homeschoolers! There are opportunities to participate in STEM offerings at the City of Cape Coral's Rotary Park. Past programs have included Gopher Tortoise, Burrowing Owls, and Native Americans.

“Environmental-focused homeschool programs at Rotary Park offer numerous benefits to students and families alike. These programs foster a deeper connection to nature and provide a rich educational experience through hands-on learning in a natural setting,” says the City’s Public Information Specialist, Lauren Kurkimilis.

Students can engage in STEM activities that enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills by participating in these programs. STEM classes encourage children to think critically, they reinforce the idea that school is exciting, and help children make connections between core subjects.

“Moreover, these programs serve as a platform for homeschoolers to connect with peers who share similar interests and values, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. Furthermore, the affordability of these programs makes them accessible to a wide range of families, ensuring that all children, regardless of background, can benefit from the educational and environmental opportunities offered at Rotary Park,” adds Kurkimilis.

Rotary Park is located on 97 acres and offers a wide range of amenities for all ages.  Younger children can enjoy the Liam J. Perk Playground and the creatures that reside at the 4200-square- foot environmental center, such as snakes, lizards, and fish. Older children and adults will enjoy the walking trails, ponds, boardwalk, and observation towers, where birding is exceptional during certain times of the year, as it’s part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, a network of 500+ premier wildlife viewing sites across the state of Florida. Indeed, both wading and migratory birds make their way through the park.

During certain times of the year, such as the rainy season, the trails may be muddy or underwater.  Visitors should always wear appropriate footwear. There’s also outdoor exercise equipment—perfect morning workouts and hikes. On-site is also the Thomas J. Allen Butterfly House with free guided tours, currently offered on Monday, Friday, and Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m. Lastly, a Little Free Library offers all age groups a chance to take and return a book.
