Although Cape Coral is a relatively new city, it still has a history. There’s no better place to find out about how it came into fruition than a visit to the Cape Coral Museum of History.
“The Museum, opened in 1987 and operated by the Cape Coral Historical Society, has three buildings and three garden areas to explore,” says Executive Director Janell Trull.
Starting with the Rosen Building, named after Jack and Leonard Rosen, founders of Gulf American Land Corporation, who established Cape Coral and worked to develop a “Waterfront Wonderland.” The 1962 building used to sit on the Cape Coral Country Club grounds as the pro shop and snack bar. The building is now the welcome center and offers a front desk and a museum store. and offices.

Secondly, the 2003 Gulf American Land Corporation Building (GAC) houses exhibits that cover the time period from the Calusa, the Spanish, and the Seminoles up to the development of the land purchased by the GAC. Also housed are archival objects, such as photographs, scrapbooks, and original documents,
The third building, The Kelly Building, was donated by long-term Cape Coral residents Clint and Sue Kelly. Opened in 2009, the exhibits chronicle the early city’s businesses, government, schools, community services, and parks from the city’s incorporation on August 18, 1970, through today.
Outside the Museum are the gardens where guests can experience a natural environment representative of Southwest Florida.
“Out front, they can walk through our Memorial Rose Garden,” adds Trull. The rose garden is maintained by the Garden Club of Cape Coral.
Also, garden-lovers will enjoy the certified Butterfly Garden and Natural Gardens, cared for by the Lee County Master Gardeners.
“Our gardens provide a wonderful addition to the Museum tour,” says Trull.
