Southwest Florida birds nest in the spring, and in the spring, the Alligator Bay at the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens turns into a bird rookery, with a variety of bird species building nests and raising their young.  Those who visited the zoo in the spring had a chance to witness nests built by birds such as Great Egrets, Anhingas, Snowy Egrets, Tricolored Herons, Little Blue Herons, White Ibises, Cattle Egrets, Green Herons, and Black-Crowned Night Herons.

“Spring is also a great opportunity to see Great Egrets with their beautiful mating plumage on display,” explains Courtney Jolly, Director of Marketing and PR.

During spring nesting season, volunteers track which birds are building nests and how many nests can be identified.

“This helps us stay informed on the types of birds that call Alligator Bay their home and whether our local bird population is increasing or decreasing. In addition to providing information about the health of our local ecosystem, this data can also help us make decisions about exhibit maintenance and restoration,” adds Jolly.

Don’t worry, bird lovers! Although this year’s spring nesting season is over, plenty of birds are still at the zoo. For one, in 2025, the zoo added 7 new American flamingos to its ever-expanding pack, bringing the total to 19. Plus, one can enjoy seeing birds such as the Southern Ground Hornbill, Black-Crowned Cranes, Blue-and-Gold Macaws, Southern Screamer, and Toco Toucan. And next spring, they will all be back.

Besides the birds, guests can see various animal habitats, such as snakes, tortoises, tigers, panthers, and giraffes; participate in a primate expedition via cruise boat; enjoy a Meet the Keeps series to learn more about the animal spotlighted; and enjoy a stroll through the historic tropical garden. Lastly, they can enjoy a bite to eat at one of the two zoo cafes and check out the Zoo Gift Shop with unique wildlife-related gifts—from t-shirts to books to stuffed animals to collectibles.

Taking the young ones to the zoo is an educational and memorable experience for all. And it’s a great chance to enjoy a special summer outing.
